CONCEPT

The original concept was for visitors to lie down under the showcase.

The map was stuck upside down (hence the name Mobility Upside Down) under the bottom of the showcase, so the person lying down would face up and see the map. Due to safety issues, the museum has decided to move the map so that everyone can see it. This also adds to the experience of the visitor who is not comfortable to lie on the floor.

However, it takes away from the interdependence and teamwork required if half of the team cannot see what the other half does.

How does it work?

By moving the ring, ‘the ship’ on to one of the objects on the map, a projection is activated inside the showcase.
An explanation, story or comparison is given for each object. Every video ends with a question for either ‘traveler one’ or ‘traveler two’ or both of them.
Tip: Don’t be too hasty with the ship: don’t move it onto another object once you have started a video.

This showcase displays the mobility of people, goods and ideas across the Archaic Mediterranean. The spread of Greek Polïs easily makes one think that the Greek culture was spread to the Mediterranean coasts. But as the different motiefs and styles in this showcase proof, there actually was a strong intercultural exchange going both from and to Greece, Egypt and Asia.
