Concept of the Exhibition

“This lively scenery depicts two merchant ships entering the harbour; the sailors are reefing the sails; a pilot boat is guiding them. We are in Ostia, the ancient harbour of the capital of the Roman Empire: Rome; third century AD. This relief used to be part of a gravemonument for probably a merchant or a captain. 

Do you hear the seagulls, the water, the sailors? Soon the amphoras and barrels will be brought to land and sold on the market. Have a closer look and listen to the stories of the old sailor, the young sailor, the merchant and the dolphin.”
